May 6 history and sanctuary moments remind us how time and compassion intertwine. From world-shifting headlines to quiet birdroom stories, every May 6 moment echoes with resilience, feathers, and a little bit of frosting.

1937 – The Hindenburg Disaster
When the Hindenburg fell from the sky in flames, it became a symbol of tragedy and of human resilience. And while we don’t fly hydrogen blimps at the sanctuary, we do have Chase, who’s made it his life’s work to chew through every physical barrier in sight. Like the engineers of old, he pushes limits with… let’s say less planning but just as much passion.
1954 – Roger Bannister Breaks the Four-Minute Mile
Roger Bannister showed the world what was possible when someone decides to defy expectations. Around here, that spirit lives on in Thumper, who doesn’t run laps he just obliterates toys. Foam? Gone. Rope? Destroyed. Records? Smashed. He reminds us that greatness comes in all sizes… especially the small, beaky kind.

1994 – The Channel Tunnel OpensThe Channel Tunnel connected England and France beneath the sea, a marvel of engineering that united people. That same energy flows through Misty, sunbathing in the aviary quietly bridging the gap between the wild and the loved, between survival and peace. Her calm is her own kind of tunnel, and she invites us to cross it gently.

2004 – The “Friends” Finale
As millions said goodbye to Ross, Rachel, and the gang, we were reminded that real friendships don’t end when the credits roll. Here, Tara and Stormy Grey prove that every night, snuggled together like it’s a rerun they never get tired of. In this sanctuary, the bonds are just as quirky, comforting, and real.
The future launched into orbit when Dragon flew, but honestly? We launch into new frontiers daily. Sometimes it’s an emergency raccoon rescue. Sometimes it’s Brad eating cake and celebrating childhood memories like they happened yesterday. Around here, discovery isn’t reserved for astronauts, it’s baked into every moment

When the world faced uncertainty, you all showed up. Through lockdowns, losses, and wild pileups of waterfowl, the sanctuary didn’t just survive, it soared. That strength came from you, every donor, every share, every warm word. It’s proof that unity doesn’t need a map, just a mission.
One quiet May 6, Brad took a bite of cake and shared a memory from long ago. Just a small thing, but it felt big. Because around here, everything means something. A story, a snack, a soft place to land. The kind of moments that grow sweeter the longer you carry them.

So here’s to May 6th a day where history meets feathers, where global milestones share space with bird drama and chocolate frosting. Thank you for walking this timeline with us. We couldn’t write these chapters without you.
Here’s to what comes next, chewed doors, surprise friendships, and memories that only get better with time.

Here is a good example of why I tell people not to try and handle or approach sick raccoons. Watch how quickly it comes back to life and gets ready for me. He put up a little fight still but I got em.

Magic loves belly tickles. Don't worry he wasn't biting me hard he was trying to get me to play. Anytime he plays too rough I stop. lately he's been trying to feed me which I don't want so I guess I'll have to stop tickling his belly too. -Tara

Walking to the store we caught a juvenile Robin eating a huge worm. It doesn't quite know to take it someplace safe to eat it yet so he tries to eat it a little piece at a time. It won't be long before this guy is an old pro. Have a great evening everyone. – Brad
