? Temporary Maintenance in Progress
Were making a few updates to keep things running smoothly. Thanks for your patiencewell be back shortly with all the heart and feathers you love.
May 20 animal rescues and history go hand-in-hand at Ruffled Feathers Parrot Sanctuary. Every year, this date seems to invite a little extra chaos, a dash of magic, and more than a few feathers. From foxes curled up in odd places to parrots with too much personality and deer in distress, May 20 is never just another dayits a chapter in our sanctuarys story, and part of something much bigger.
On May 20, 1927, Charles Lindbergh soared into history with the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight. While he was crossing oceans, weve been crossing county linessometimes state onesanswering calls for help. One year, on this very date, we released a red-shouldered hawk who had recovered from a wing fracture. He lifted off into the sky just like Lindberghexcept he had a squirrel yelling at him from a tree as a sendoff.
Moments like that are more than just rehab checkboxes. Theyre milestones in our own timeline of May 20 animal rescues and history.
May 20 is also the day blue jeans were bornLevi Strauss patented them back in 1873. Around here, we know a thing or two about durability. Weve taken in animals that should have given up, but didnt. Like the fox we rescued in 2021 whose back legs were badly injured. It took weeks of treatment and endless patience, but she made it.
That rescue, shared in our May 20 animal rescues and history posts, became one of our most shared stories of the year. Because sometimes, the toughest souls show up in the smallest bodies.
In 1990, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope began sending back images of deep space. While the world was looking up, we were looking closerat baby owls in gutters, raccoons in attics, and squirrels with attitudes.
We often say our sanctuary is small, but mighty. But on May 20, the scale always feels bigger. In 2020, we were called about a deer attacked by dogs. The call came in just as we were wrapping up a different rescue. Somehow, the police recognized my voice on the phone and asked, “Is that Brad?” Yeah. It was. And yeah, she made it.
Stories like that keep filling our timeline of May 20 animal rescues and history, each one stranger and more meaningful than the last.
Not every May 20 has been hectic. In 2022, we posted a photo of two foxes curled up together in the grass. No broken bones. No blood. Just rest. And for a sanctuary that rarely slows down, that was a gift.
That same year, we also celebrated the chaos. Kiki screamed into a water bottle and Ray tried to out-charm everyone at the sanctuary gate. You can scroll through our Facebook history for a long list of May 20 animal rescues and history postsfrom the hilarious to the heroic.
These stories arent just about rescue. Theyre about resilience. And theyre woven into a larger tapestry of historywhere our little sanctuary in Kentucky stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the worlds most pivotal moments. Every creature weve rescued adds another thread to the fabric of May 20 animal rescues and history. Thanks for being part of it. Want to see what else happened on May 20 throughout time?
