Good Morning from the Madness Saturday at the Sanctuary

The Madness of June Begins

is in full swing, and its not slowing down for anyone. Were knee-deep in baby birds, wide-eyed fawns, and mangey little foxes doing their best impression of tragic fairy tale villains. Add in a few wildlife emergencies with a side of bleach mishaps, and youve got the full sampler platter of sanctuary life this week.

Fawns, Foxes, and FeathersOh My!

Its been one heck of a week. First, baby birds started pouring inloud, hungry, and relentless. Next came the foxes, many with mange, trailing in quick succession. Then, as if on cue, the fawns began tumbling in like its some ungodly wildlife parade. Naturally, the exhaustion hit like a truck. National Wildlife Federation What To Do If You Find A Baby.

Every June brings heartbreak. One of the roughest moments of this June wildlife rescue madness came in the form of a fox who, despite care, didnt make it. He lacked so much nutrition that even though he got one good nightone peaceful, safe moment in careit wasnt enough. Im just grateful he wasnt alone at the end. Sleepless Nights and Bleach-Splattered Birds

Speaking of chaos, we had a bird literally explode with mites in someones car. Not mine, thank heavens. Im still recovering from that call. And one woman, bless her panicked heart, actually poured bleach on a mourning dove to kill the bugs. What was her next steplight it on fire? ?

Bleach Isnt Bird Medicine A Dove Misinformation Warning

Sleep? Nonexistent. Meals? Usually cold, if they happen at all. Sitting down? Only if its to treat a raccoon on my lap. Peace hasnt visited since June came crashing in.U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service What to Do If You Find a Baby Bird or Injured Wildlife

? Raining Pigeons and Retired Kittens

Oddly enough, there havent been as many squirrels or opossums lately. However, pigeons? Theyre practically falling from the sky like someones chucking them off rooftops for fun.

On a side noteweve got a couple of kittens looking for homes if anyones in the market for a furry little landmine. The infamous Bunny Kitty has finally been fixed, thank goodness. Her baby factory days are done, and she might just retire to couch duty at our place. Undecided.

?? Pond Projects, Payroll, and Panic Sprints

Meanwhile, the pond and aviary work is crawling along. At this point, Im pretty sure I need to crack the whip on the help. Once. One crack. Thats all Ill have time for before I have to sprint off to the next emergency or last-minute supply run. Or payroll. Or mowing. Or chasing a duck down the street. Who even knows anymore?

? Forty Raccoons and a Little Perspective

Honestly, Ive never been this tired in my life. Then again, one of the women at Broadbent is caring for 40 raccoon babies. FORTY. While still working and teaching others how to do it. Thats next-level. I could never. Their little chitters start sounding like a horror movie soundtrack after a while. Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Injured and Orphaned Wildlife

? The Classroom Daydream

Sometimes I daydream about sitting in the back of a high school classroom, nodding off while a teacher drones on about anything. Id sleep like a rock. Unless it was biology. Or animals. Or business. Or history. Okay, fineI was a nerd. Still am.

But those are the things I hope to pass on: passion, purpose, a little humor, and a reminder that were all just doing our best to get through the day.

Through it allthe sleepless nights, the heartbreaking losses, the unexpected moments of joythis yearsJune wildlife rescue madnesshas pushed us to our limits and reminded us why we do what we do. Its not just chaos; its purpose with feathers, fur, and fierce little fighters.

Its Friday, folks. The weekend is so close you can smell the fresh-cut grass and overdue yardwork. Rejoice, ye weary workers. May your Friday be kinder than a baby raccoon on Red Bull.

Stay strong, stay silly, and have a beautiful day.
