Where Hope Takes Flight

March 31st Wildlife Rescue Update: A Day of Triumph and Heartbreak
On March 31st, we had a particularly busy day with several wildlife rescues. The day brought in a mix of triumph and heartbreak, as we had 10 animals pass through our doors. As a result, between the growing number of rescues and the ongoing care, its been a whirlwind of activity. However, every animals story matters, and I want to share the full details with you.
The Robins: Triumph and Loss
We had three adult robins that came in. Fortunately, two of them made full recoveries and were released back into the wildalways a heartwarming moment. Sadly, one robin didnt make it through the night, and we had to say goodbye to it. This is part of the work we do, but it never gets easier.
The Hawk: A Tragic Loss
A hawk was found in the roadway, struck by a vehicle. By the time our volunteer arrived, the hawk had already succumbed to its injuries. Its always hard when these beautiful creatures dont make it, but Im glad we could at least get to it quickly.
The Pigeon: A Full Recovery
The pigeon came in with a relatively minor wing injury. After a quick check, it was clear that the pigeon would fully recover. This was a small victory amidst the challenges of the day.
The Duck: Natures Call
I had a duck that flew off before we even had a chance to respond. Problem solved, as they say.
The Geese: Injuries and Heartache
I managed to catch two geese that day. One was easier to catch, and the other I recorded on GoPro (head camera). However, the third goose is still out there, and we arent sure if it even needs rescue yet, so were keeping a close eye on it. Unfortunately, both of the captured geese were badly injured by vehicles. One had a mate, which is always incredibly sadespecially this time of year when they are nesting.
The Squirrel: A Survivors Escape
Lastly, the squirrel we received was a real survivor. It had been stuck in a live trap on a roof for 48 hours, which left it in a weakened state. When it came to us, it was in dire condition, but after some quick care, it made an incredible recovery. In one of those funny moments, though, while I was transporting the squirrel to Broadbent, I forgot to latch the cage properly when I took the feed bowls out. Before I knew it, when I sat it down to open the truck door, it had busted out and was gone. While I didnt get to release it officially, Im confident the squirrel had made a full recovery before it made its escape and now lives around the birdhouse somewhere.
Conclusion: Triumphs and Setbacks in Wildlife Rescue
While March 31st was one of those days filled with both successes and losses, its part of the journey. Every animal that comes through herewhether they make it or notteaches us something, and Im grateful for the chance to help them in whatever way I can. Although I may not always have the time to sit down and write long stories about each animal, rest assured that every single one of them is important, and Im committed to making sure theyre cared for. Ill still try to get a picture or two. ?
