Honoring May 10: A Day of Reflection

As we celebrate May 10 Sanctuary Milestones, we take a moment to reflect on how far Ruffled Feathers Sanctuary has come, from humble beginnings to life-changing impact.
What began as a small rescue has grown into a life-saving haven that’s helped over 20,000 animals.
From parrots who now call the sanctuary home to wildlife we’ve guided back to freedom, we’re proud of every life touched along the way.

Moments in History That Inspire Us

1994 – Nelson Mandela’s Inauguration
On this day, Mandela became South Africa’s first Black president, an iconic step toward unity and justice.
Similarly, we believe in second chances and fighting for the voiceless-especially animals in need.

1869 – Completion of the Transcontinental Railroad
The railroad connected the east and west coasts, forever changing the nation’s landscape.
At Ruffled Feathers, we’ve also built bridges-between animals, people, and communities.
Each rescue is a new link in a powerful chain of compassion.

Our Sanctuary’s Mission Since 2012

Since our founding, we’ve been committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing wildlife across Kentucky.
Every year, more than 1,000 animals arrive in need of care.
Some, like our parrots, stay with us for life.
Most, however-raccoons, eagles, baby birds, are healed and released back to the wild.
This work helps restore the natural balance in our region.

Rescue Stats That Speak Volumes

By the Numbers:

20,000 animals helped since 2012
Over 750 parrots rescued, rehabilitated, and rehomed
300+ wildlife rescues already this year
Each number tells a story of courage, compassion, and teamwork.

The Power Behind It All: You

Our sanctuary doesn’t run on feathers alone, it runs on love, dedication, and you.
Your support helps us keep the doors open, the aviaries full, and the wildlife wild.
Together, we’ve created more than just a safe place.
We’ve built a community rooted in empathy, and a movement with wings.

Im so tired. So many people get mad at me for not answering the phone or calling back soon enough. Im sorry. My phone literally rings all night and day long. I can be talking to one person trying to help while 3 other people are trying to call me. Its so exhausting. People need to be patient. I also dont get to see many Facebook post I am way too busy just fielding phone calls. Im not bragging believe me but I get upwards of 5,000 Facebook notifications a day. People tag me hundreds of times on the same post often times. Its impossible to sort through all that and have time for anything else. I just cant do it. 3Am 6am people just dont care they call, text, or message me. I could be laying dead in the yard and people would literally be showing up and sticking things in my cold dead hands telling me this or that needs your help I cant drive another 30 minutes from here and walking away. The jest is Im just exhausted. I need rest. Anyways this upset me that anyone would try to keep this baby as a pet in a bathtub splaying its legs on the slick tub floor. But watching him be able to use his legs and swim around makes me smile still. Probably the only reason Im still alive is for the smiles. Baby animals of all kinds can always make me smile. No matter how bad the day. ?

*******Volume Warning ?? ******** Get a cockatoo it will be all cute and cuddly all the time. Always snuggly and wanting to be held. Just like all the cute videos you see posted online. Please don't believe it and do your research before bringing one home. I zoomed in for this video but I am still almost 20 ft away from her as she screams. Keep in mind Baby is one of the best behaved most lovable cockatoos I've ever had the pleasure to work with. That doesn't mean she is always quiet. If you can't handle screaming like this for hours on end at times then a cockatoo is probably not the bird for you. Do your research and know what you are getting into and a cockatoo can also be the perfect addition for the right family . Have a great evening everyone. – Brad
