How it spreads
Humans can become infected by coming into contact with infected animals, their products, or contaminated fluids.
Infected animals carry the virus in their intestines and shed it in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces.
Symptoms
Symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, headache, and shortness of breath.
Symptoms usually appear within 2 to 10 days after exposure.
Severe complications
Severe cases can lead to neurological changes, pneumonia, encephalitis, or death.
More than half of humans infected with bird flu die.
Treatment
Some antiviral drugs, if taken within two days of symptoms, may help.
Getting treatment quickly can prevent complications and reduce the risk of developing severe illness.
When to seek medical advice
If you are unwell after traveling to areas where avian influenza outbreaks occur and have been in close contact with birds or wild animals, tell your doctor.
