13 Baby Opossums Pulled From two Moms

Good morning, everyone! Welcome to another Monday, another fresh start to the week. At least, I hope it is for all of you.

First off, I just want to say a heartfelt thank you to every single one of you who reached out after Iago passed. The compassion and love I felt from so many of you truly meant the world to me. Even the one wild comment from a random person that made absolutely no sense was kind of entertainingI laughed at how ridiculous it was. And honestly? Thats the mindset Im choosing this week: find things that make me laugh and enjoy them.

Its easy to get caught up in the daily grind, forgetting to take time for what actually makes us happy. So, in the spirit of honesty (and at the risk of being roasted by all of you), heres one of my greatest joys: heckling movies.

I cant help it. I crack jokes, predict whats going to happen next, and talk absolute trash to horror movies like Im in the scene myself. Its a sport, really. Unfortunately, Tara doesnt appreciate my talent. She claims I ruin moviesblah, blah, blah. What shes really saying is I keep her awake when shes trying to nap. Lets be realTara has never stayed awake through an entire movie in her life. Im the exact opposite: if I start a movie, I have to see how it ends. Otherwise, why bother?

Since Tara doesnt appreciate my running commentary, Ive found a new audiencethe birds. And let me tell you, they love my jokes. I am, without question, the funniest person who has ever lived, according to them. Even better? They somehow always laugh at the right momentssometimes before I do. I still havent figured out how they pull that off.

Of course, theres a downside: they pick up language fast. And not just words I saysomehow, they absorb words from TV that I swear Ive never said in my life. Case in point: Raylin. We let him watch The Wire once, and he came out the other side a changed bird. He rebranded himself as Ray Ray, slicked his crest back, andwhen hes madhe can string together a tirade of profanity that would make a sailor blush.

Hes also taken to announcing his arrival whenever we go shopping. A couple of months ago, we walked into a store, and out of nowhere, he yells, Ray Ray is here, b*s! With conviction. I dont know how he does it, but Im in awe every time. And honestly? I feel lucky every single day that hes part of my life.

Which brings me to something else thats been on my mindthe bird who took over Iagos old spot. I dont want to say replacement because thats not the right word. Iago was one of a kind. But the next bird in need, the one who landed in that space, is a sweet Amazon. And unlike Iago, who would dodge my attempts at interaction, this girl wants to spend time with me every evening.

I dont know what her purpose in my life is yet, but I know shes here for a reason. Maybe I wont see it until years down the road, but one day, itll hit meclear as daywhy she was meant to be here, why our paths crossed. Thats just the way it is when it comes to birds, or helping animals in general. If we take the time to listen, theyll tell us the story were meant to hear. Sometimes the best things in life dont reveal their meaning right away. They just unfold naturally like a story waiting to be told.

So this week, Im facing things with eyes wide open. Im ready to see, ready to listen, and ready to laughespecially with those who love a good joke as much as I do. I think its going to be a good week. Do your best to make it a good one for yourself, too. Find what makes you happy. Do what makes you laugh.

Winter has been long, cold, dark, and icy, but spring is coming fast. The baby squirrels are already here, the first baby opossums have arrived, and Bunny Kitty (a stray I finally convinced to come inside) is about to have kittens for the umpteenth time. She hasnt complained about being insideprobably because shes very pregnant and has finally accepted that maybe life indoors isnt so bad. Well let her have this litter, but after that, the neighborhood plague stops here. Shes getting spayed, and her babies will find good homes. As for her? Well see. Maybe shell go back outside, or maybe shell become our newest employee.

One thing is for surewe all step out of our comfort zones when were in desperate need. But this week, Im stepping out just because I want to. Im watching movies. Im laughing. Im telling jokes to birds who think Im the greatest comedian of all time.

Now, your turn. If you could do one simple thing this week that would make you laugh, lift your spirits, and leave you feeling better, what would it be?
